Cansaulim is a small village situated in the taluka of Mormugao in Southern Goa. It is located around 7 km from the main town of Mormugao and about 25 km from the main city of Margao. Cansaulim Monte is best known far and wide for the Chapel of Three Kings that is nestled here. It is in a beautifully quiet spot at the top of a hill with stunning views right over the South Goan coast and you can see loads of other whitewashed churches in every direction that you look.
The church really only comes to life though on the Feast of Epiphany on 6 January when the local kids take the roles of the 3 Wise men from the biblical story of the Nativity. The festival is dedicated to Three Kings of Magi who came with their gifts to infant Jesus the Christ. The Three King’s Feast is one of most popular and favorite holidays of Goa citizens and tourists who are lucky ones to watch this amazing festival. The famous grand holiday is celebrated every year on January 6th by local Christians as well as by the Hindus in all parts of Goa, and especially in Cansaulim, Arossim and Cuelim resorts.
The whole event is accompanied by loud music and dances. Lots of people are coming to the Hill to watch the procession and the ritual of gifts giving. An amazing fair is conducted during the whole festival: people eat, drink, buy gifts, souvenirs, spices made by local Goa craftsmen and simply have fun from dawn till dusk.
The Cansaulim beach situated at around 16 Km from Margao is a vast stretch of pristine beach which is mostly secluded, however well served by the local restaurants and shacks which cater for the needs of relaxing tourists. It is at a distance of about 15 minutes’ walk from the Cansaulim Monte. One can see the wide expanse of the beach while standing atop the Hill. Those visiting the Monte can take a stroll up to the beach. The palm groves along the coast provide a perennial green roof which is a respite for those who had enough of the sunshine. Cansaulim beach is one of the most secluded and clean beaches in Goa, which has many local restaurants and shacks. The beach is covered with golden sand and is considered to be the second largest beach stretch in India, as it also includes the nearby Arossim and Cuelim Beaches.
The journey to the Monte is fun and peaceful with wide curving roads having trees on either side. You can even make the climb on foot.
The Cansaulim Monte is a perfect place for picnics or evenings out with the family. Its wide expanse of land is useful for numerous games. It is a very restful place and one can enjoy spending hours just sitting there and soaking up the view.
