Goa government may soon ban drinking of alcohol in public places in order to curb nuisance caused by people under the influence of alcohol. Chief Minister informed reporters about the move on the sidelines of a ‘Swachch Bharat’ function yesterday.
“We need to come out with the notification banning drinking of liquor in public places. The notification will be issued by October end for which we will amend the existing law,” Parrikar said at a function here.
The liquor shops and shops found violating the order by allowing consumption of alcohol outside their premises will be either fined or their license will be cancelled.
The Goa, Daman and Diu Excise Act, 1964, which currently governs the licences of the liquor outlets in Goa will be amended to grant the Excise department powers to implement and enforce the ban on drinking alcohol in public places.
Goa government has already imposed a ban on drinking in select public places known as ‘No Alcohol Consumption Zones’ and on beaches.
