Retail gets a boost as Mall De Goa opens its doors today

Goa’s retail sector is all set to open a new chapter on Saturday with the state’s first full-fledged mall, Mall De Goa, set to allow both locals and tourists to explore international apparel as well as savour a variety of cuisine.
With 82 stores and stalls including an INOX multiplex and major retail chains, Mall De Goa aims to become a shopping destination in the state, directors of Jai Bhuvan Group said.

Situated at Porvorim, the mall has a children’s gaming centre, a food court, fine dining restaurants and a two-level parking space. The brands available at Mall De Goa are Marks & Spencer, Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, Shoppers Stop, Wills Lifestyle, Pepe Jeans, Allen Solly, Calvin Klein, Lee, Wrangler, RayBan, Fabindia, TNS Diamonds and Van Heusen among others.

“After seeing the malls in the US, we thought of having a one in Goa. Though we had all the approvals in 2009 and started work in 2011, retailers were not ready to come. Even now some of the retailers are still not ready,” director Bhuvanish Seth said.

Scepticism on the part of retailers played a key role in delaying the launch of the mall, which was conceptualised in 2009 by the Jai Bhuvan Group. “Our initial estimate was 40 crore but we have spent nearly 100 crore. It will take us nearly seven years to break even,” Bhuvanish said.

The directors downplayed fears that the mall would weigh on the earnings of other malls in Goa, especially Caculo mall in St Inez. “Malls complement each other. They don’t compete unless they are in the same area and target the same audience,” director Rajesh Seth said.

The directors said that the opening of a new mall will bring more entertainment options to families as well as tourists visiting the state.

Mall De Goa is also expected to create direct employment for over 500 individuals and indirectly create employment for another 500, the directors said.

Mall De Goa will feature several family restaurants such as KUDOS, Black Pepper, Yellow Chilli, Ritz Classic Sea Food and Pan Asian Hut.
