Location Shri Manguesh Temple is located at Mangueshi Village in Priol,Ponda taluka,Goa. it is at a distance of 1km from Mardol and close to Nagueshi,Panaji the Capital of Goa is about 22km and Margao 26 km. History Initially Lord Manguesh came from Kutthali alias Kushthali of olden Sahashasta in the Shalivahan Shake 1482 named Roudra Sanvatsara of Hindu calander or 1560 A.D. when Sahasashta area was brought under the rule of foreigners or Portuguese and the Hindus were forced to convert into Christian’s since then till today the Lord is residing in Manguish wada. Hence the Mahajans can pray of God. The initial place of Shree Mangesh God was in the very pious place of Kulshasthali on the bank of the holy river Aghanashini in the Sashashti taluka of God state. Today this place is called Kuthal (Cortalim ). In olden days this temple was having the glory and wealth when it was in Kulshasthali . Today, no sign of it is seen. Slight sketch of the olden glory can be drawn from the 400 yrs old papers recorded during Portuguese rule. The temple owned farms, fields, orchards and land properties in Kushasthali and other villages. Ornaments of gold and silver, clothes made of silk and many other people costly items were the property of the temple . The huge bells in the temple were held in place by strong,, thick roops made of silve , states the papers. The gram Saunstha of communidade of Kushasthali or kuthal was established by the people residing in the village . Those villagers were the owners of this communidade. They all believed in the God Shree Mangesh , hence he become the God of this communidade. When Nath Sampraday (devotees of Nath faculty ) established in Goa. Shree Manguesh was called by Mangnath or Manjinath . Naturally, the responsibility of celebrating utsava and looking after all the expenses was taken by the communidade . Evidences of this are found in the older historical documents and the book written by the government officers of those days, Philip Nery Xavier wrote in his book named “Bojesku Estireeku Das Communidade that “ The communidade of kuKuthal used to expend for all the six temples in the village including the temples Shree Manguesh and Panchishta Devata. This temple of Kushastali , where it was enjoying the lavish and prosperous routine in a wealthy and royal way, had to be shifted to its present location on a vaddo of Priyol village in Ponda taluka due to the political upheaval in Goa during the second half of 16th century . The historical excert though very to tureous and mind blowing , is equally an evidence of the faith our ancestors had on Shree God , their sacrifice for the God and their unturned courage to face the inevitable. The southern boundary of island of Goa is on the bank of the river Aghanashini (Zuari) river, hence it was inevitable that this destructive power would attack the Sasashti taluka . Kutthal was a very important holly place for Hindus and hence the Hindu people in this region were scared to death. Anything could happen at any time. Nobody could judge the circumstances. Something had to be done urgently. Knowing this, the people looking after the temple and the authorities in the Kushasthali had an emergency secrete meeting in the temple and asked the God to show way. The same night, they had a drishtanta (true dream) that “I am residing everywhere, hence no need to have any doubts or worry about. But if you wish to protect the Shivalinga depicting Lord Manguesh , then immediately take it out of this place whichever way you prefer. And whenever you would find this Linga so heavy that it can not be taken further, keep it on the soil and have pooja and prathishthapana done there itself.

The family God (Kuldev) of Kutthali was taken to Priyol and hence Kutthali was fully immersed in the sorrows. The villager believed that whatever bad times their friends , relatives in Goa island are passing through, thy would also have to face the same because their God is taken elsewhere and there is nobody to protect them now. Thinking this those kulavi’s of Shree Mangesh God, who remained behind decide to shift:. Some of the families, wishing to be in close proximity of the devasthan, made themselves comfortable in Mangueshi, Priol, Mardol, Veling, Kundaim upto Phonda. Read More+
