The bustling commercial capital acquires its unique architectural character due to the grand Indo-Portuguese homes
that adorn this township. Borda, a suburb not far from the city centre has the majestic Palacio Santana da Silva
towering up.
From the original Seven Gabled house, as it was called, now only three gables remain. The house was commissioned in the second half of the 18th century by Ignacio Santana da Silva, an eminent personality of the time.
It is the only palatial home to have steeply-inclined folded roofs. The façade displays careful treatment of the pilaster design, the pediments over the windows reveal a formal and decorative work in the purest Goan tradition.
As you enter, the staircase takes you up to the beautiful Baroque and Rococo styled chapel placed in the centre of the house.
The rest of the layout developed around a large interior court. As you walk along the main façade, there are three beautiful reception rooms. Then a fourth on the Western side.
You can still admire the frescos on the walls inside, along with the formidable collection of 18th century furniture.
